Today I set aside the day as my give back day. At 10 am I went out and helped 6 other ladies cook a meal for a soup kitchen. We made lasagna, salad, vegetables and cookies. Then we made 150 sack lunches that included a cheese sandwich, granola bar, clementine, and a juice box. I packed as much food as I could fit into my Toyota Highlander and drove over to Hope Community Services located in New Rochelle. At 4:30 I arrived back to serve the meal with about 16 other volunteers. First we served juice and water to everyone. Then we brought out bread trays to each table. Split pea soup was the first course. The leader of the group had the entire process down to a science. She briefed the troops. We had an assembly line of food servers. The “wait staff” worked in groups of two. One person would hold the tray of plates while the other would serve the food to the table. I was a waitress. I loved handing the plates to the guests. The guests were so grateful. The food looked delicious. We were in luck, we had made enough so that some could have a second helping! I have volunteered to cook this meal before but have not had the pleasure of actually going to the Soup Kitchen. I enjoyed every moment.
