I had one of those days. I just felt like I could not get anything done. I knew that I had a PTA meeting that night, so I was scrambling. It was already the second night this week that I would be out at a meeting. I was completely dreading it. This year I am PT Council Treasurer. Basically, PT Council is the Board that is the umbrella organization for all of the PTA’s in my school district. Since I am a past PTA President, I am able to serve on this board. PT Council has monthly executive committee meetings on Mondays from about 9-1pm. I really enjoy those meetings. We also have 3 evening meetings that feature speakers. As treasurer, I give a short state of our finances speech.
I finally got my act together and raced out of the house leaving kids and puppy to fend for themselves for the evening. I gave my short speech and I honestly would have bolted, but I was sitting in the first row. So I sat with my friend Cheryl and relaxed. I actually enjoyed the panel of speakers. They spoke about the new technology in our schools. One of the main points discussed was how technology could lead to collaboration. New technology, such as chrome books and ipads, was allowing the kids to go off into small groups and collaborate on projects. At the end of the discussion, the head of IT for our district, gave us one final tip. He said that there are free college level courses on the web for almost any subject. He gave us the links. I was so excited. I ran home and checked them out. I am a huge believer in life long learning. I just started working in the health and wellness direct sales business. I decided that I could definitely benefit from a course in nutrition and health. I found a great course called Nutrition, Health, and Lifestyle: Issues and Insights. The course is offered through Coursera and taught by a professor at Vanderbilt University. I signed up for the course. The catalog stated that the course should only require between 2-4 hours of coursework per week for 7 weeks. The course is free. The only catch is if you want a verified certificate at the end, you need to pay $49.00 to authenticate that you are taking the class. The certificate is completely optional. But honestly if I am going to the trouble to take the class, I might as well get the verified certificate. Class starts January 20th. What have I gotten myself into?
